Best Bagger Contest Successful!

On Saturday August 17, contestants from across Minnesota competed using reusable grocery bags to determine the best bagger in the state.  Nine contestants vied for the title of Best Bagger.  The Sears Court at the Mall of America was packed with fans and onlookers who soon picked favorites.  The judges critiqued the quality of each bag on the grounds of weight, principles of bagging, proper bagging technique of foods, like bread and eggs, and style, attitude and appearance.

The first place winner in the competition was Alex Finch of Chris’ Food Center, Sandstone, winning $500 cash, a trophy, and a trip to San Diego, CA to represent Minnesota at the National Grocers Association Best Bagger Championship in February 2020. Second place, along with $250 and a trophy was awarded to Emma Kiffmeyer of Kowalski’s Market, Woodbury and third place, and $150 and a trophy, was awarded to Cody Sik of Mackenthun Fine Foods, Waconia.

Aside from prizes for the top three finishers, there were four winners in additional categories, with winners receiving $50 and a trophy.  The “Traveler” award was granted to Alex Finch of Chris Food Center, Sandstone, for coming the longest distance.  The “Balance” award was captured by Michael MacDonald of Jubilee Foods, Mound, whose two bags had .63 difference between them.  Alex Hepler of Hy-Vee Food Store, Oakdale captured the “Spirit” award, with his many friends, family, and fans.  Finally, the “Style” award was presented to Bethany Koster of Fareway Stores, Inc., who best exemplified the image and style of the baggers in the contest.

Special thanks to our event sponsor, UNFI, the volunteers and judges, and congratulations to all of the participants and winners!
